This month’s cover story spotlights local literacy pioneer who is set to celebrate a milestone birthday. Ruth Colvin will be honored with a 100th birthday party celebration Nov. 18 – thrown by the local agency she launched 55 years ago. Her early efforts to increase adult literacy grew to an international movement, but started simply through community networks right here in Syracuse.

Two online stories also accompany this print story. Meet a current student of LiteracyCNY, and visit an English Language Learners class for non-native speakers, many who are either refugees or immigrants to Syracuse.

Inside another local legend is also celebrating a milestone birthday. Read about how blues guitarist Bobby Green celebrated his 80 years in this month’s A Friendly Five column by Reggie Seigler.

Also meet this month’s featured father, who encourages his daughter’s love for reading. Learn about the next set of tiny homes – being unveiled on Veterans Day on South Salina Street. And learn about expanded programming happening at the South Side Communication Center and much more.
